Seasons in Kiev

Kiev is the capital of Ukraine. It is situates in northern part of the country of both banks of the Dnieper River. There are several sandy beaches on banks of the river. The city has mostly plain relief with minor geological formations such as butte hills and ravines. The most elevated point of the city has altitude of 203 m (666 ft.) above sea level.

Kiev has temperate climate with relatively moderate winters and warm humid summers. Range of annual averages is between -6 °C (21 °F) and 19 °C (66 °F) with annual amount of precipitation of 550-630 mm (21-25”). Nearby Kiev and Kaniv reservoirs are influencing mostly circulation of winds.

Spring in Kiev

Kiev is called “the city in the park” so spring is especially picturesque season there. Blooming apricot, locust and buckeye trees with scattered fountains of lilac and their fragrance in second half of the season create unique sensual picture of the city.

Though, March is still cool with probability of snow. Daily range is 6 °C (43 °F) to -2 °C (28 °F). Tangible warmth comes in April when nighttime temperatures reach above freezing with 4 °C (39 °F) and around 12 °C (53 °F) at afternoon. And in May actual warmth comes to the city when days have up to 20 °C (68 °F) and there is drop to around 10 °C (50 °F) at night. Precipitation and amount of daily sunshine constantly grows throughout spring.

Summer in Kiev

Summer bursts In Kiev in June with pleasant warmth and thunder. Daily averages of 23-24 °C (73-75 °F) at afternoon and 13-14 °C (55-57 °F) at night are typical for whole season as well as sudden heat of u to 30 °C (86 °F) for couple of days. In those periods beaches of Dnieper are crowded. The river warms up to 20-22 °C (68-71 °F) providing vitalizing coolness.

In terms of monthly amount of precipitation summer is the rainiest season. Fast torrential showers with lightning, thunder and strong winds are adding charm to summer in Kiev. In heist of the season rains bring some crisp freshness.

Autumn in Kiev

Autumn conquers the city in gradual manner. At first September puts down vigilance of locals by the Indian summer with thin webs sparkling against rays of moderate sun. Averages of 19 °C (66 °F) to 9 °C (48 °F) remain until last week of the month. Then October takes its part giving warm colors to foliage and blowing with cool piercing winds. Finally November delegates authority to winter. Last month of autumn has temperature range of 4 °C (39 °F) to -1 °C (30 °F).

Actual amount of precipitation in autumn is smaller than in summer though amount of rainy days is same. Tedious drizzle occupies the sky with long periods of overcast and ground is wet almost constantly. Only in late November rain may shift to sleet of actual snow.

Winter in Kiev

Winter in Kiev is typical for temperate climate. Temperature goes above freezing only in early December of in late February. Average readings of thermometer at afternoon are between -2 °C (28 °F) and 0 °C (32 °F), but similar to summer there may be periods of frost when temperature drops down to -20 °C (-4 °F). Snow cover usually accumulates in December and remains to early March. It snows frequently. Also amount reduces drastically to about 2 hours per day if sun shows itself out of thick blanket of clouds.
