Greece is stipe of land in south-eastern Europe with range of peninsulas and island. Relief of the country consists of mountains, densely populated valley, numerous islands, straits, bays and coves between Aegean and Ionian Seas. There are zones of different climate within the country: Mediterranean, alpine and temperate.

Almost every square inch of territory of the country is a resort except, maybe, northern regions of inland part of Greece. It seems that the country consist of majestic cliffs, golden beaches and lush woods. Weather, nature and relief combined to create this resort country.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is the second biggest city of Greece. It is important transport nodal point, tourist and culture center of the country and the region. It has nice warm climate and plenty of architectural, archaeological and natural sights.

Climate Thessaloniki by Season

The city is situated in the zone of Mediterranean climate with hot summers, mild winters and moderate precipitation. Spring begins with cooler weather and averages of 15 °C (59 °F) at afternoons and 4 °C (39 °F) at nights, but by the end of the season days are much warmer with range of temperatures between 26 °C (79 °F) and 12 °C (53 °F) respectively. During hot and dry summers temperature may rise 31 °C (88 °F) or slightly above at afternoon, but nights will bring fresh air with 18 °C (64 °F) of temperature.

In autumn temperatures are going down unlike amount of rains. Gradual reduction of temperature brings daily averages of 29-14 °C (84-57 °F) down to 16-6 °C (61-43 °F) by the end of the season. In the middle of winter daily temperature is hovering between 10 °C (50 °F) and 2 °C (35 °F). Snow and frosts are extremely rare and never last longer than couple of days or even hours.

Thasos

Thasos

Resorts island is situated in northern part of the Aegean Sea in 12 km (7.4 mi.) from coasts of inland Greece. It is peaceful place with slopes of mountains covered by pines, olive trees and chestnut trees. It suits better for family vacations for there are not many night clubs or establishments of this kind. But woods and beaches are great.

Climate Thasos by Seasons

The island has weather conditions similar to the rest of northern Greece. Most of time weather there is warm and dry. Springtime warming follows from 14 °C (57 °F) in the beginning of the season to 24 °C (75 °F) right before summer begins. During the hottest season afternoon heat may reach 32 °C (89 °F) and there is almost no rain through whole season except couple of days with drizzle or light showers.

Trough autumn and winter temperature drop begins from 27 °C (80 °F) passes mark of 15 °C (59 °F) in the end of autumn and hits 10 °C (50 °F) in the middle of winter. Snow may fall couple of times during the season but the cover won’t last longer than two-three hours.

Peloponnese

Peloponnese

Peloponnese is the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula. It is the cradle of ancient Greek civilization. There are many historical sites: ancient city of Mycenae, fortress in Tiryns, temples of Corinth, famous Sparta and much more. Common resorts are there too.

Climate Peloponnese by Season

General climate of the region varies depending on area and altitude. Coastal areas are warmer while inland and mountainous territories are cooler. Majority of most popular destinations of Peloponnese are situated on coasts and have warm Mediterranean climate. Through spring temperature rises from 17 °C (62 °F) to 26 °C (79 °F) and precipitation comes to neigh. Summers are completely dry with afternoon heat up to 34 °C (93 °F).

Autumns have downward progression of temperatures from 30 °C (86 °F) to 20 °C (68 °F) and significant growth of precipitation. Winters are cool, but not cold, and rainy. In fact winter is the rainiest season of a year. Afternoon average temperature reaches 15 °C (59 °F).

Pieria is one of the regions of northern inland Greece. It has fabulous concentration of historical sites and resorts. The Olympus itself is located in this region. Also, there is wide variety of other activities including skiing and ecological tourism. Weather averages given below are fair for plain part of the region.

Climate Pieria by Seasons

Pieria is the mountainous region, so it has variable weather conditions depending on the altitude of given location. In general there is mild Mediterranean climate typical for northern Greece. Spring comes with gradual warming from winter chilly weather. Each day is warmer than previous and eventually daily range grows from 15-6 °C (59-43 °F) to 25-14 °C (77-57 °F). Coastal regions of Pieria have hot summers with rare rains and averages of 34-20 °C (93-68 °F).

Autumn is another shoulder season that brings slow and steady cooling and slight growth of rain. Daytime average temperature reduces from 29 °C (84 °F) to 17 °C (62 °F). In winter days are cooler, but actual frosts and snowfalls occur only on mountains. Averages for whole season are between 12 °C (53 °F) at afternoon and 3 °C (37 °F) at night.

Paralia (Katerini)

Paralia

One of the most famous tourist destinations in northern Greece is Katerini. Paralia is the seaside resort settlement included in it. It is situated in 68 km (42.2 mi.) from Thessaloniki on coast of the Aegean Sea. There are numerous sites of great historical interest around the city and developed infrastructure.

Typical Mediterranean climate lands hot summer and mild humid winters on Paralia and Katerini. Spring begins with 15 °C (59 °F), but with the course of the season temperature rises to 25 °C (77 °F). Warming and drying continues in summer too with average of 34 °C (93 °F) in the peak of the season.

Autumn brings some rain and cooling from pleasant 26 °C (79 °F) in September to 16 °C (61 °F) in November. Winter is naturally cooler with afternoon average of 11 °C (52 °F) and 3 °C (37 °F) at night. Starting from mid-January or early February weather becomes warmer every day.

Rethymnon (Crete)

Rethymnon is the small town in northern part of the Crete Island. On first glance the town offers typical seaside activities. Bars, restaurants and beaches in Rethymnon are different. Every stone and tree is soaked by thousand years of history and true Mediterranean bliss.

Crete is situated in southern part of Greece, so weather there is warmer than in northern inland territories. Springs have comfortable weather with temperatures growing from 18 °C (64 °F) in March to 27 °C (81 °F) in May. Summers may seem hot and windy in its latter half and completely dry. Average temperature may reach 33 °C (91 °F) or even higher.

Weather of autumn is more comfortable with reduction of afternoon heat from 30 °C (86 °F) to 21 °C (70 °F). Middle of autumn is less windy than summer and there is some raining. Winter has shifty, cool and windy weather with daily averages of 15-9 °C (59-48 °F).

Corfu

Corfu

Corfu is the north most located and the second biggest of the Ionian Islands. Along with warm weather and clean sea several localities on the island offer wide variety of activities for all kinds of tourists. Easter celebrations are the busiest time because of bright local religious festivities. Also, temples of Corfu and their holy relics are popular pilgrimage destinations of catholic and orthodox Christians.

Corfu shares same Mediterranean climate as most of the country, but weather there is rainier than in other regions. Range of springtime temperatures is between 15 °C (59 °F) and 24 °C (75 °F). Amount of rain reduces towards summer. After onset of summer warming is continuing to the middle of the season. In July-August afternoon heat rises to 32 °C (89 °F) and there’s almost no rain.

Between September and November amount of rain grows five times while temperature decreases from 27 °C (80 °F) to 17 °C (62 °F). Winter is the damp and cool with 17-15 of rainy days in each months. Temperature hovers around 13 °C (55 °F) throughout the season.

Kassandra, Chalkidiki

Kassandra

Western peninsula of the Chalkidiki region is called Kassandra. It stretches in the Aegean Sea. The peninsula has magnificent long beaches, mountains and pine grooves. In terms of tourism Kassandra has great potential for sightseeing, seaside vacationing, culinary and nighttime activities.

The peninsula belongs to northern Greece and has respective weather conditions. Fast warming of Mediterranean spring follows from 14 °C (57 °F) to 25 °C (77 °C). Summer sun raises heat to 33 °C (91 °F) at afternoon and residual warmth provides nights with pleasant 20 °C (68 °F). Precipitation is moderate to insignificant throughout a year.

In autumn is rains more often and the air cools down to 16 °C (61 °F) in November. Winters are usually windy with chilly temperatures of 11 °C (52 °F) at afternoon and 3 °C (37 °F) at night. Improvement of weather begins in late February.

Rhodes

Rhodes

Rhodes is the fourth largest island of Greece and the biggest among Dodecanese Islands. It is situated in south-eastern part of the Aegean Sea. It is called the Island of the Sun for there are up to 300 sunny days per year. It offers luxurious hotels, majestic mountains and clean beaches and plenty of sites of great historic interest. Famous Colossus of Rhodes was stand somewhere there.

Climate on the island is warmer than in inland northern regions of the country. Spring weather is pleasant with growth of daytime and nighttime averages from 18 °C (64 °F) and 7 °C (44 °F) to 28 °C (82 °F) and 15 °C (59 °F) respectively. Rains are coming to neigh through the season. Summer is hot and dry. Rainless afternoons may have 37 °C (98 °F) of heat or even higher.

In autumn rains appear again and unlike temperature frequency of precipitation grows throughout the season. Average temperature drops from 32 °C (89 °F) to 20 °C (68°F). Each of winter months has 14-15 rainy days and range of average temperatures between 14 °C (57 °F) and 6 °C (43 °F).

Heraklion (Crete)

Heraklion

Heraklion is the main city of the Crete Island it was named after hero of ancient epic Hercules. It is two and a half thousand years old. Now this is the center of the island and comfortable starting point for exploration of the Crete.

Similar to Rethymno Heraklion has hotter variation of Mediterranean climate, but it is cooler than weather of Rhodes. Spring brings gradual reduction of rain and proportional growth of temperature from 18 °C (64 °F) to 27 °C (80 °F). Summer is usually completely rainless and hot with around 32 °C (89 °F) of afternoon heat, but seasonal breezes are easing the heat.

In autumn it rains again, but general amount of precipitation in Heraklion is moderate, so it won’t bother visitors. Moreover the season offers great ranges of temperature. Afternoon averages are decreasing from 30 °C (86 °F) in September to 21 °C (70 °F) in November. Winter is the rainiest and the coolest season with around 15 °C (59 °F) at afternoons.

Zakynthos

Zakynthos

The third biggest of the Ionian Islands is situated near to western coast of inland Greece. The capital of the island has several ancient churches and Byzantium museum. In nearby villages locals make traditional carpets and there is Laganas beach where loggerhead turtles lay their eggs.

The island has typical climate of central Greece, but with more precipitation. Spring lands steady growth of temperature upon Zakynthos. Afternoon warmth grows from 17 °C (62 °F) to 27 °C (80 °F) through the season while precipitation gradually decreases to almost complete absence in summer. Along with dryness summers are pretty hot with afternoon average reaching 34 °C (93°F) in the middle of the season.

Autumn eases heat and brings further reduction from 30 °C (86 °F) at the beginning to 19 °C (66 °F) at the end of it. Precipitation grows significantly, but it isn’t abundant. Cooling finishes in the middle of winter with average of 15 °C (59 °F).
