Bulgaria is situated in eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula between Romania and Greece. Relief of the country is the mixture of plains, hills, valleys and mountains of various heights. Actually the country lies in the zones of the continental and Mediterranean climate. Mountains create barriers and paths for air masses. Area of different weather conditions changes with the course of the seasons. In winter influence of continental climate is stronger, while in summer Mediterranean climate prevails. In general northern part of the country is colder and rainier. The Black Sea influences only on coastal regions.

Sunny Beach

Sunny Beach

The Sunny Beach is located on western coast of the Black Sea. There are 16 km (10 mi.) of beaches and hundred hotels on long shady alleys with lush greenery. Local beaches were awarded by the “Blue banner” as they are clean. Among dunes rare plants grow and Balkan Mountains are looming on the horizon.

Sunny beach has humid subtropical climate similar to weather of south-eastern part of USA or Italy. Usually temperature is above freezing throughout a year. Spring brings significant warming from 12 °C (53 °F) in March to 23 °C (73 °F) in May. In summer afternoon averages grow to 27-30 °C (81-86 °F). In beginning of spring nights are chilly with 4 °C (39 °F), but by July and through August they are 21 °C (70 °F) warm. Temperature of the sea is around 26 °C (79 °F) through summer.

Beginning of autumn has pleasant warm weather, but it cools down significantly with course of the season from 25 °C (77 °F) to 14 °C (57 °F). Cooling continues until January when daily range of temperatures is 7-1 °C (45-34 °F). Winter and around it is the dullest time of a year with some 3-4 hours of daily sunshine.

Nessebar

Nessebar

Nessebar is one of the oldest cities on Coast of the Black Sea and in Europe. It is situated on rocky peninsula in 3 km (1.8 mi.) from the Sunny Beach. Gentle sea in crown of peculiar white rocks and dunes 7-8 m (23-26 ft.) tall create atmosphere of a fairytale. Small windmill at entrance to the city is on top of unique face of the city.

Nessebar is situated to south from the Sunny Beach. It has same variation of tropical climate with warm summers, chilly winters and moderate precipitation. Spring is the time of steady warming when average temperature rises from 12 °C (53 °F) March to 23 °C (73 °F) in May. In summer the air warms up to 30 °C (86 °F) and it is the driest season of a year with only couple of significant showers.

Autumn begins with pleasant weather. The Velvet season may last until early October, but in November daily range of temperatures is 14-5 °C (57-37 °F), so it is pretty cool. Winter is cool too, but temperature usually stays above or equal freezing. Actual frost may occur several times in the middle of a night.

Albena

Albena

Main attraction of Albena is 7 km (4.3 mi.) of clean beach with “Blue Banner” award. Beach of Albena is one of the broadest with up to 300 m (984 ft.) of width. It is the newest resort in Bulgaria and it is completely equipped for many kinds of vacationing including family activities. Also, Albena is a spa resort.

Climate in Albena is bit cooler than in previous two resorts due to it is situated to north from them. Spring progression of temperatures follows from 10 °C (50 °F) to 21 °C (70 °F) and warmth reaches 28 °C in summer. Occasionally it is even warmer. The sea warms up to reaching 22 °C (71 °F) in July.

Velvet season in Albena is shorter and usually lasts to mid-September. Temperature drops from 23 °C (73 °F) to 11 °C (52 °F) through the season. In winter weather is cool with 6 °C (43 °F) at afternoon and down to -2 °C (28 °F) at night on average, but actual night frosts might be even colder.

Saints Constantine and Helena

Saints Constantine and Helena is one of the oldest resorts in Bulgaria. It is situated in picturesque park with several mineral springs. It is all about peace and quiet. Nighttime temperatures are growing from 3 °C (37 °F) to 17 °C (62 °F) through those two seasons.

Autumn is somewhat reversed spring. Air gradually cools down from 25 °C (77 °F) to 13 °C (55 °F), so first couple of weeks is suitable for vacationing. In winter air cools down to range of 7 °C (44 °F) at afternoon and -1 °C (30 °F) at night. Though there are two hot pools with mineral water that are open year round and one of them even works 24/7.

Golden Sands

The resort is situated in 18 km (11 mi.) from Varna. It was named after gentle sand of local beaches. The region is under protection of the state to preserve local wildlife. As other locations in Bulgaria Golden Sands resort was awarded by the “Blue Banner” for being clean and ecological.

The resort is situated in northern half of the coast, so it has cooler weather partially due to lesser influence of air from above the Mediterranean Sea. Summers are moderately warm and sunny. Warming follows through whole spring from 12 °C (53 °F) to 22 °C (71 °F) and continues to the mid-summer period. Hot summer afternoons may have 30 °C (86 °F) or even slightly higher, but nights will have pleasant 18 °C (64 °F).

Precipitation is distributed evenly over a year and it is moderate. Snow is rare as well as severe frosts. Initial weather of September is completely pleasant too, but progression of the season leads to significant reduction of daily averages. In the middle of winter daily ranges will be between 6 °C (42 °F) and -1 °C (30 °F).
