Climate of country varies greatly due to features of relief and global location. Northern portion of Iran has subtropical weather conditions while climate of south is tropical. Central regions are lying within the zone of continental and mountainous weather. Coasts of Persian and Oman Gulfs are hot and humid with winter averages between 16 and 18 °C (61-64 °F). At summer temperature there ranges from 24 to 30 °C (75-86 °F). Annual amount of precipitation is significant and varies from 600 mm (23.6”) in plains to 1000 mm (39.3”) on mountain slopes.

Central regions are having arid subtropical climate. Mountainous relief affects weather of certain locations. Winter averages are between 3 and 8 °C (37-46 °F) while at summer there is 30-32 °C (86-90 °F) with occasional leaps to 40 °C (104 °F), in some of the hottest places (as Qom) and up to 50 °C (122 °F) and even higher. Highlands of Alborz and Zagros are cooler and rainier. Winter averages are -4 to 12 °C (25-54 °F) and at summer temperature is between 16 and 26 °C (61-79 °F). Annual amount of precipitation reaches 2000 mm (78.7”).

Spring in Iran

At March weather becomes better. Temperatures rise to somewhat comfortable range. In coastal areas averages of March are around 17 °C (63 °F), southern regions are bit warmer and in mountainous regions are cooler. However even in highlands temperature don’t drops below 10 °C (50 °F).

At April temperatures are nicer. Averages in whole country are between 20 and 24 °C (68-75 °F). Precipitation decreases and falls mostly at midnight. Water in both Gulfs warms up to 22-26 °C (72-79 °F). Since second half of the month weather considered as most comfortable. At May in flatlands rises to 31 °C and occasional rains are accompanied by thunder.

Summer in Iran

Summer begins with slight decreasing of precipitation. At June temperatures are only slightly higher than they were at May. June is the hottest and driest month of a year. Rains are rare. Daytime averages in most of the country are between 30 and 36 °C (89-97 °F). Foothills are cooler with about 25 °C (77 °F) while in Caspian coasts temperature often reaches 38 °C (100 °F).

August brings increasing of precipitation and warms up waters to perfectly comfortable temperatures. Waters of Caspian Sea are having 24 to 28 °C (75-82 °F) and both Gulfs are as warm as 30-32 °C (86-90 °F). However swimming may be spoiled by swarming jelly fishes and rays.

Autumn in Iran

Autumn brings rains to the country. Peak of precipitation is at October when monthly amount of it reaches 215 mm (8.4”). At September rains are often too while temperatures are only slightly lower than they were at August. In mountains precipitation takes form of hail.

In plains October temperature is still rather comfortable for its range is between 22 and 25 °C (72-77 °F). In mountains late October is almost spring for daytime average is about 10 °C (50 °F) and night it may drop to -3 °C (27 °F). Peaks are covering by snow at this time. November means cooling everywhere: 4-8 °C (39-46 °F) in foothills, 13-15 °C (55-61 °F) for central regions and 16-18 °C (61-64 °F) in southern coasts.

Winter in Iran

In northern and western regions of Iran winter starts with wet snow and averages at 1 to 8 °C (34-46 °F). Southern coasts are usually warmer. Local temperature is 10 to 14 °C (50-57 °F) at daytime while in mountainous regions even daytime temperature are in negative range (below 32 °F).

January is the coldest month with -5…-8 °C (23-18 °F) in northwestern potion of the country. Central and coastal lands are much warmer with about 11 °C (52 °F). February brings first sings of approaching spring. Temperatures are rising to about 13 °C (55 °F) except alpine regions (above 1500 m or 4920 ft. a.s.l.) where air is still cold.
