Seasons in New York

New York State is the fourth largest state in the United States. It is located in the northwest of the country and includes several climatic zones. New York borders the Atlantic Ocean by water, and Canada by land. Its borders overlook the shores of several of the Great Lakes of North America.

In the east, on the Atlantic coast and in the western part of the state, the climate is continental. In the southeast there is a subtropical climatic zone. Summers in the state are hot, winters are cold, there is a lot of rainfall and tornadoes. This does not prevent tourists from enjoying the culture, art and nature of New York.

Spring in New York

New York City is the largest city in the state, located in the subtropical zone. Average temperatures from March to May range from 41 °F to 62 °F (+5..+17 °C) Due to the large number of buildings, cars, roads and a small amount of greenery, the city has become an island of warmth. The surrounding area is always 5-7 °F cooler. To stop the warming, roofs of houses are painted white. It reflects radiation from solar energy.

Tourists, in addition to the active cultural life and business activities of New York City, are attracted by the Hudson Valley. Its advantages are picturesque landscapes, small old cities, as well as the huge Harriman State Park. Bear Mountain Park, the zoo and other attractions are nearby.

Summer in New York

In the summer, the differences in the climate of different parts of New York State are the least noticeable. Near the Atlantic Ocean, temperatures hover around 68-77 °F (+20..+25 °C) from late May to August. In July, the thermometer rises to 82 °F (+28 °C). This is the famous New York heat. There are often heavy but short rains. They are brought by the wind from the Atlantic Ocean. In the western part of the state, precipitation occurs less frequently.

Temperatures are 3-5 °F lower. Tornadoes usually don't reach western New York. Thunderclouds come from the Great Lakes in summer. Sometimes they can stay for a long time. Hurricanes visit New York every 18-20 years. In the summer, New Yorkers travel, vacation in numerous coastal hotels, or visit national parks.

Autumn in New York

From September to October, cold weather in New York State can bring masses of cold air from the Appalachian mountain range. At such times, a long period of precipitation is established. The heat subsides, the sun hardly peeps out of the clouds. Temperatures gradually drop to 68 °F (+20 °C) (September), then 55 °F (+13 °C) (October) and 36-42 °F (+2..+6 °C) (late November).

Autumn in New York begins a long period of autumn holidays, festivals and parades. It concludes with a grand Macys' Thanksgiving Day Parade. In addition, the Medieval Festival, the Adirondack Wildlife Park, Niagara Falls, or one of the many lakes are worth a visit. From November, tourists go to the ski resorts of Hunter Mountain, Lake Placid or Saratoga Springs.

Winter in New York

Winter in New York varies greatly between the west and east of the state. Warm winds come from the ocean and quite warm and humid weather reigns near the coast. Temperatures rarely drop below 24 °F  (-4 °C). The average winter temperature in western New York is about 32 °F (0 °C). It often rains or sleeps. In the East, frosts come from the side of the Great Lakes. Temperatures are predominantly 18 °F to 23 °F  (-7..-5 °C). On some days, the frost reaches 14 °F (-10 °C). Hurricanes and snowstorms happen.

It is quite cold in New York State from November to April. You can ski, ice fishing or stay in the city and go to the cinema, to musicals, to visit exhibitions, museums, art salons.
