Seasons in New Mexico

The climate in New Mexico is arid or semi-arid depending on the area. At higher altitudes, there are patches of pleasant alpine climate in the northern and eastern parts of the state. 

Nature is diverse and includes everything from desert to forests, mountains and canyons. The average daily temperature is more dependent on altitude than on geographic longitude. The seasons are pronounced. Large river overflows and storms can cause flooding.

Spring in New Mexico

Spring in New Mexico is warm and sunny. In May, the season of thunderstorms and tornadoes begins. Average temperatures range from 50-70 °F (+10 °C +21 °C) in March to 80-90 °F (+27 °C +32 °C) in May. Floods are possible caused by spring snow melt or short but heavy rain.

Be careful when trying local dishes. New Mexico people love Mexican food. Many treats are extremely spicy. The favorite entertainment of tourists is to stand in the "four corners". There is a place where the states of New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and Utah meet. It is marked with a special sign. Archeology lovers can visit the historic village of Taos Pueblo, as well as the ruins of the cities of the Pueblo Indians and the Aztecs. In the Gila valley there are unique cave dwellings of ancient people.

Summer in New Mexico

New Mexico has very hot summers with large temperature swings between day and night. The hottest month is June. The temperature reaches 96 °F (+35 °C). Nights are cooler at only 50-64 °F (+10 °C +18 °C). Humidity is low and there are many sunny days.

The state has preserved many monuments from the period of Spanish rule. In the capital of Santa Fe, it is worth seeing the Governor's House, the Georgia O'Keeffe Gallery, and the Interethnic Museum of Folk Art. There are many architectural monuments here: the chapel of Capilla de Nuestra Secora, the monastery of Guadalupe, the Cathedral of St. Francis and the Madonna monument. Nature lovers can admire the Rio Grande Falls.

Autumn in New Mexico

Connoisseurs call the beginning and middle of autumn the best time to travel around New Mexico. Warm but not hot weather, little rainfall and the absence of tornadoes create pleasant conditions for tourism. Temperatures gradually drop from 85-90 °F (+27 °C +32 °C) in September to 30-65 °F (-1 °C +15 °C) in November. In the north of the state it is noticeably cooler.

In October, Albuquerque hosts the world's largest balloon festival. One of the most interesting places to walk is Carlsbad Caverns National Park. It is surrounded by the mountains of Guadeloupe. Dancing white sand dunes can be admired in the White Sands Reserve.

Winter in New Mexico

New Mexico has little snow and many warm, sunny days even in winter. Temperatures often drop below 0 °F (+32 °C) at night. Average daily temperatures are in the 25-30 °F (-4 °C -1 °C) range. On the plains during the day, the air warms up to 63 °F (+17 °C).

The state is home to the most famous scientific laboratory in the world - Los Alamos. It was here that the US nuclear programs were developed in the 1950s. Now on the territory you can see the ancient monument of the Tsirege Indians. Another object is the Roswell military base. Here in 1947 traces of a UFO were discovered.
